Access Statements
Since the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act Locke Carey’s team of Inclusive Environment professionals have been carrying out access audits, preparing access statements and offering practical advice on how to achieve a common sense and cost effective approach to overcome any issues, which may discriminate against disabled people. From our experience of disability issues and solutions, we may recommend the adjustments/alterations required then together we can assess both their impact on the building design or the existing business bearing in mind the overall benefit for disabled people.

The DDA does not require you to make unreasonable adjustments; and factors can include cost, effectiveness and disruption to the business. Only when we have determined a good fit with the functionality of the building do we recommend you carry out the changes or implement in new build designs. Accurate assessment of business elements can conclude that no physical alteration or special provisions are required recommending instead integrated procedures or staff training.

Our clients can be assured that by appointing Locke Carey they will not only establish what reasonable adjustment may be necessary to improve day to day access, but will also provide important advice on the procedures that should be adopted for evacuating the disabled in the event of fire.

An Access Statement demonstrates the designer’s commitment to inclusive design and is required to accompany many Planning Applications and all Building Regulations Applications.
